Liability and physical damage on commercial autos of various types of miscellaneous business classifications are often more difficult to place than the standard business auto and delivery vehicles. Examples of these are beer trucks, agricultural vehicles, carpet services, caterers, contractors, fish and seafood haulers, food and frozen food delivery, fuel oil dealers, ice cream vendors, messenger services, non-emergency municipal vehicles, newspaper deliveries, pizza delivery, road equipment, snow removal and street cleaners.
Limits for liability generally are available up to $1 million. Physical damage limits vary with each underwriter but usually are $100,000 or higher for a single unit and up to $250,000 for combination tractors and trailers. Deductible options run from $250 to $10,000. Motor truck cargo is written for limits of $100,000 or higher depending on the commodity hauled. Liability rates are based on commercial vehicle classifications, territories, distance of radius, age, experience and record of drivers. Physical damage rates are flat rates based on actual cash value or stated value of the equipment. Most underwriters provide PUC, ICC and MS-90 filings where needed. Some trucking specialists also provide truckers workers compensation and truckers occupational accident coverages.
Long haul trucks
Long haul trucking operations are distinguished from other trucking activities by the radius of operations of the company or individual unit. Long haul usually means a radius from the garaging area of 300 miles or more. Liability, physical damage, bobtail/deadhead (non-trucking) liability, motor truck cargo coverages are available through insurers and managing underwriters specializing in commercial trucking risks.
Long haul operators carry freight over the roads in tractor-trailer units having high-load capacities. Fleet operations (5 or more trucks) are distinguished from non-fleet operators for rating purposes. Long haul risks are rated on a zone basis to register the operator's principal garaging area and zone traveled to farthest away from that point. Trailer interchange agreements may be covered.
Motor truck cargo
Most specialty underwriters offering commercial auto and truck coverages also write motor truck cargo insurance. This insurance covers the commodity being hauled for all risks of loss. Low-limit cargos are written rather freely for short and intermediate hauls. Today, with larger trucks carrying more expensive merchandise and hazardous cargo over long distances, the coverage is much more closely underwritten. Commodities often excluded, except in special cases, include: highly-valued breeding animals; bullion, money, precious metals, securities, fine arts and jewelry; cotton; eggs in shells; explosives; mobile homes; hazardous material haulers; race horses and show animals.
Coverage is generally written for the value of the cargo. Limits above $250,000 or $500,000 are submitted to underwriters or shared by several insurers in an agency.
The following is a directory of insurers, managing general agents, excess and surplus lines brokers who have replied to our survey of markets writing commercial autos and trucking risks.
