PIANY ELECTS OFFICERS AND
DIRECTORS FOR '97-'98

The Professional Insurance Agents of New York (PIANY) elected the following officers for the 1997-'98 administrative year:

President--Shelly H. Kozel, president of Lezok Ltd., which has an office in New York City.

President-elect--Mark J. LaLonde, CIC, CPIA, AAI, president of Noyes and LaLonde, Inc., with offices in Liverpool and Oneida.

Vice president (re-elected)--Timothy J. Smith, CIC, president, C.W. Baker Insurance Agency in Lockport.

Vice president (re-elected)--Phillip Plafker, CIC, CPIA, president of Industrial Brokerage Corp., which is an affiliate of Steinberg Insurance Group in Lynbrook.

Vice president--Craig Jacksland, president, Jacksland Associates, Johnstown.

Treasurer (re-elected)--Lynne R. Frank, CPCU, president L.R. Frank & Associates, Inc., Williamsville.

Secretary (re-elected)--David Wallace, vice president, Vanguard Risk Managers, Inc., Oneida.

Robert J. Pfeffer, a partner in The Heffner Agency, Inc., of New York City will serve as immediate past president.

The association also chose five agents to serve on its board of directors: John Gaynor, LUTC, vice president of Calkins/ Lowther in Waterford; Mark LaLonde; Michael Paluba, LUTC, owner of Hermitage Insurance Brokerage in Middle Island; Phillip Plafker; and Martin Koles, CFO of Insur-it Agency, Inc., in Plainview.

C&F appoints v.p. for Philadelphia region

Don Spence, CPCU, has been named regional vice president of the Philadelphia Region of Crum & Forster Insurance. Spence, who began his career with CFI in 1981, had recently served as regional marketing manager of CFI's Western Region located in San Francisco.

Restaurant association names RMPG WC safety group manager

The Risk Management Planning Group (RMPG) of Hempstead, New York, was appointed the safety group manager for the Empire State Restaurant and Tavern Association workers compensation program. RMPG specializes in the administration of workers comp insurance programs and the management of safety groups. It services employers, associations and insurance carriers in 12 states.

RMPG's services include a 24-hour claims service center, medical bill processing, return to work programs, and a loss control center. It also features discounts and a dividend program.

In addition to the Empire State Restaurant & Tavern Association workers comp program, RMPG is the New York State Insurance Fund safety group manager for the New York Glass Association, the Plumbing and Heating Wholesalers Employers Asssociation, the Metropolitan Parking Association, the Queens County Builders and Contractors and the AFL-CIO.

CPCU sponsors workshop on professional liability

"Professional Liability--Identifying, Controlling, and Financing the Loss Exposures"--will be the focus of a half-day workshop co-hosted by the CPCU Society's Long Island Chapter on October 16 in Garden City.

The workshop speaker will be Michael R. Levin, CPCU, ARM, senior manager, insurance consulting practice at Deloitte & Touche LLP in Chicago, Illinois. Levin is chairman of the Illinois Captive and Alternative Risk Funding Insurance Association and chairman of the Workers Compensation committee of the Illinois Chamber of Commerce.

Levin will discuss:

* what makes one a "professional"

* loss exposures faced by various types of professionals

* defenses available to the professional who is sued for malpractice

* how to avoid or reduce the severity of professional liability claims

* how to use insurance and other risk financing techniques

IFNY luncheon will feature prominent industry leaders

The annual luncheon of the Insurance Federation of New York (IFNY) on November 25 will include an address by Norman Barham, vice chairman of J&H Marsh & McClennan and former president of Johnson & Higgins. The luncheon, to be held in the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Manhattan, will feature the presentation of IFNY's 1997 Free Enterprise Award to Dennis Chookaszian, chairman and CEO of CNA Insurance Companies.
