“Nonprofit organizations are focused on their missions and shouldn’t have to worry about their insurance,” says Judy Foulkrod, vice president for San Francisco-based CharityFirst. “We work hard to make sure we’re providing the right insurance products and services for our nonprofit customers so they can concentrate on the vital and important work they do in our communities.”
Nonprofit organizations have unique insurance needs that require a specialized approach. “At CharityFirst, we’ve provided insurance for nonprofits for more than 20 years,” Foulkrod says. “And because that’s all we do, we understand the special challenges and risks associated with managing these organizations.”
“Today’s producers need a company that commits all of its resources to nonprofit organizations instead of just committing a single department or division.”

Since opening its doors in 1985, CharityFirst has been insuring the nonprofit sector. Today, the agency insures more than 5,000 nonprofit organizations nationwide. CharityFirst customers come from a variety of sectors, from arts and civic organizations to family social services to schools and educational services.
“Insuring nonprofits requires specific expertise because these organizations have diverse missions and provide a variety of services,” Foulkrod explains. “Insurance needs can vary greatly from one organization to the next. For example, a program that serves kids is going to have specific liability exposures that aren’t addressed in a standard commercial package. We have to understand our customers’ unique exposures so we can provide the best products and services available to them in today’s marketplace.”
In addition to its expertise in nonprofit insurance products and coverages, CharityFirst also has extensive risk control services and resources designed specifically for nonprofit organizations, according to Foulkrod. She says that nonprofit organizations need risk control products that address their unique concerns. For example, these organizations may have exposures from activities such as hosting fundraisers or special events, recruiting and supervising volunteers, or working with vulnerable populations such as seniors or people with disabilities, she says.
“CharityFirst is fully committed to loss prevention,” says Foulkrod. The agency works closely with its nonprofit customers to help them understand and reduce their exposures to risk. But to be effective, loss prevention for nonprofits has to be cost efficient as well as easy to implement. “These organizations are very much focused on achieving their missions and have precious few resources and very little time to devote to loss prevention,” Foulkrod explains. “That’s why we have dozens of easy-to-use and highly effective loss control tools available online, including fact sheets on a variety of topics from “Insurance Basics for Nonprofits” to “Child Abuse and Neglect: Considerations for Youth Serving Nonprofits.”
CharityFirst not only develops strong partnerships with its customers, but also with its agents and brokers, Foulkrod says. “We devote ourselves to agents and brokers and truly understand the challenges they face in today’s highly competitive insurance environment,” Foulkrod said. “Today’s producers need a company that commits all of its resources to nonprofit organizations instead of just committing a single department or division. We also support our products with unparalleled underwriting, local claim services and value-added services such as specialized loss control.”
Foulkrod concludes: “CharityFirst is proud to be known as one of the few existing comprehensive nonprofit insurance programs in the U.S. The program is backed by strong, nationwide carriers. St. Paul Travelers supports the bulk of the program by providing the property, liability, auto, professional liability and workers compensation coverages. Directors and officers is provided by the United States Liability Insurance Company (USLI), and AIG provides the accident and health coverage. CharityFirst’s complete program gives agents and brokers the convenience of placing their business through one resource.”
