Chosen by a jury of its peers, Senn Dunn is the 2005 Rough Notes Agency of the Year. Established in 1927, Senn Dunn has achieved impressive growth since it began a transition from a “boutique” agency to a diverse financial services organization under the direction of new, younger owners. Agents representing Rough Notes Agencies of the Month from years before 2005 selected Senn Dunn from among last year’s featured cover agencies.
A key element of Senn Dunn’s transition was a branding initiative, based on client surveys, that led the agency to adopt the trademarked tagline “We’ll handle it.®” The agency then set about building a strong, motivated team of producers by drawing on talent from the banking and computer industries. A mentor is assigned to each new producer to provide coaching in sales and marketing skills.
Also contributing to Senn Dunn’s success is the strength of its relationships with its carrier partners. The agency’s property/casualty department is staffed with former insurance company underwriters, who know how to prepare submissions that go straight to the top.
Education ranks high at Senn Dunn: the agency has 12 CPCUs and 6 more employees studying for the designation. It also has 27 CICs on staff, and 45 more are taking classes.
Last year the agency posted revenue of some $14.6 million, an increase of 13% over 2004 and $10 million above its revenue from the year 2000. Since 2000, Senn Dunn has grown from 40 to more than 95 people in its headquarters in Greensboro and its branch office in High Point.
