American Wholesale Insurance Group's Specialty Underwriting Division

Headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, American Wholesale Insurance Group operates in the standard and E&S marketplace through three core divisions: AmWINS Brokerage, AmWINS Specialty Underwriting, and AmWINS Group Benefits.

Established in 2001, AmWINS is focused on two basic growth modes: organic growth and acquisitions. The company is the second largest wholesale insurance broker and has more than 35 office locations nationally.

The AmWINS Specialty Underwriting division consists of six MGA/MGU companies and multiple binding authorities throughout the country. With a staff of more than 100 employees, the division now generates more than $200 million in premium and works with approximately 30 programs and 20 carriers, primarily E&S carriers.

“The division consistently meets the needs of retail agents looking for specific industry coverages, as well as carriers looking to put new programs in place that require a partner with impeccable underwriting credentials and knowledge of key industry niches,” says Scott Reynolds, president of the Specialty Underwriting division.

Each company in the AmWINS Specialty Underwriting division focuses on a specific industry niche. “This allows independent retailers to grow their business with clients requiring specialized approaches to risk management,” Reynolds says. The six MGA/MGU companies are:

• Americana Program Underwriters - An MGA specializing in affinity and program management, administering some 18 programs generating in excess of $100 million in premium

• AmWINS Special Risk Underwriters - A niche property facility that specializes in the underserved middle market E&S property business

• Lambert Green Limited - Provides retail agents and brokers with true all-risk coverage for cash-in-transit and courier business; the longest tenured armored car program in existence

• Seaboard Underwriters - Specializes in the transportation industry

• Specialty Programs & Facilities Managers (SPFM) - Specializes in administering insurance programs for property owners and managers of residential and commercial California real estate

• Woodus K. Humphrey & Co. - An MGA that focuses on woodworking clients

Reynolds emphasizes his division’s focus on growth. “We’re constantly on the lookout for underserved industries for special programs,” he says, “and for building new programs for industry segments that have difficulty finding affordable rates or customized service.”

Ben Francavilla, Sr., managing director of Americana Program Underwriters and a charter member of the Target Markets Program Administrators Association, cites the welding industry as a typical example. “Recognizing gas and welding distributors as underserved by viable coverage programs, we have a program especially designed to meet their unique needs,” he says. “That brings up another advantage of doing business with us. Our underwriters extensively study every aspect of our prospects’ businesses and characteristics, to understand exposures in every way possible. We have people who not only do underwriting very well; they also have learned how to weld. Continuing to find unique ways to build programs for classes not well served is a major objective of ours.”

Francavilla adds, “AmWINS is able to participate in one of the best venues for carriers and program administrators. Whether it’s collaborating with other attendees, learning about new programs, or listening to keynote speakers, a lot of important business gets done at the Target Markets meetings.” *
