Target Markets Program Administrators Association
Program Administrator
CharityFirst
It’s unlikely that many program administrators operate with a more appropriate business title than CharityFirst. This 22-year-old firm, headquartered in San Francisco, insures more than 5,000 nonprofit organizations and devotes its business activity solely to nonprofits. All types of them—arts, civic and social clubs and organizations; residential programs and services; schools, educational and training organizations, and others.
“In addition to individual organizations, we also write sponsored and endorsed programs such as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America,” said Judy Foulkrod, area senior vice president at CharityFirst. “We’re proud of our lengthy business association with ELCA, which is written through Zurich. Additionally, we offer nonprofits extensive risk control services and resources addressing their unique concerns.”
Programs handled by CharityFirst are backed by several Best’s rated A, A+ and A++ carriers such as St. Paul Travelers and United States Liability Insurance Company, among others. Coverage offered via St. Paul Travelers includes domestic property, liability, auto, professional liability and workers compensation. USLI supports Directors and Officers and a BOP policy for very small organizations.
Recently CharityFirst developed the capability to do business on a nonadmitted basis for the first time. “It’s allowed us to accommodate accounts that were difficult to handle either due to special coverage considerations or the need to develop an appropriate premium,” observes Foulkrod. “Another important development at CharityFirst is our ability to write international coverage, something new for us. We can now meet both the domestic and international needs of the myriad nonprofits with international exposures. Whether nationally, or globally, CharityFirst has solid partnerships with its clients and with its agents and brokers.”
Its business relationship with St. Paul Travelers was responsible for an opportunity to explore potential new markets. “Recognizing the necessity for continuing growth,” says Foulkrod, “we were grateful when St. Paul Travelers brought the Target Markets Program Administrators Association to our attention a couple of years ago. We weren’t losing any business, but with certain markets softening, it was clear that we needed to explore new products. By joining the program administrators organization we learned immediately how efficient it became to talk with carriers, with vendors, and with other program administrators, and to obtain important program information via the association’s communiqués. Its two annual meetings are extremely informative. Specific needs and concerns are addressed in a very highly focused manner at the TMPAA meetings.”
As CharityFirst grows, its programs will continue to be made available only through licensed agents or brokers. “Finding ways to meet the changing needs of our agents and their clients is the primary focus of CharityFirst. Adding the ability to help our agents cost effectively service very small organizations, place coverage for both domestic and foreign exposures for those with international operations, and provide risk control materials and support specific to the unique needs of nonprofits are some of the ways we put charities first at CharityFirst,” says Foulkrod. * |
