“We could have lost everything!” That lament would have been shared by youth, sports, student and recreational organizations that could have suffered financial ruin if they had not been covered by accident medical and/or liability insurance.
Celebrating 21 years as a managing general underwriter of student accident, special risk and related programs nationally, Special Markets Insurance Consultants, Inc., makes certain that its independent agents and clients have the necessary coverages to protect assets.
Many coaches and volunteer event directors involved with today’s youth sometimes don’t realize that their personal assets could be jeopardized because of an injury to a player or spectator, or because of property damage to field or court when they practice or play there. Their focus is on teaching and helping participants to enhance skills and development.
“Accidents aren’t supposed to happen. But they do,” reminds Nora Stransky, founder and president of Special Markets. “With medical costs continually accelerating, injured participants or spectators want bills paid promptly. If there’s no insurance coverage, other means are sought. That usually means lawsuits against the activity organizers.”
As a niche MGU, Special Markets focuses on the following programs:
• Youth and Adult Sports and Recreational Activities—Accident medical and general liability plans covering participants in most activities such as one-day events, sports full seasons, or special events for church groups, clubs, and various associations. According to Underwriting Manager John Stransky, “Our creative plan designs allow us to meet an insured’s individual needs while addressing the carrier’s program objectives. Coverage for activities is not a luxury. It’s often a requirement. These days, school district and municipality policies require Proof of Insurance before permitting facility use. These entities, cognizant that protection is vital, are frequently named as additional insureds. By providing accident medical for participants, and general liability for the activity’s hosts, funds are earmarked to assist with medical bills and to protect the group should a claim be entered against it for damage to person or property.”
• Student Accident Medical, including Catastrophic Coverage—Special Markets is a leading underwriter for all types of schools—private, public, parochial or home schools. Students are covered for all school activities, including interscholastic athletics. Written on a blanket basis, policies cover all students. No individual enrollment is necessary. Some school budgets allow for only basic coverage levels. But some schools purchase catastrophic limits of $1 million or $5 million. Many plans cost less than one penny per day. This program’s claims range from minor playground scrapes to severe disabilities requiring lifetime care. Special Markets offers catastrophic plans that provide lifetime benefits coupled with heart and circulatory death benefits.
• Service and Experience: Key Ingredients of Success—“Service is our top priority,” emphasizes Stransky. “We offer simplified applications, and quotes are generally provided immediately. We have single coverages or complete packages. Policies and certificates are issued in-house in a timely manner. Promising a response means delivering it. It’s important that clients bring their concerns to us for problem solving. We have a client liaison group to assist agents and clients, making certain they have what they need when they need it. Experience is the most important contribution Special Markets offers. Our management team has vast knowledge of all aspects of the insurance business, combining over 100 years serving the industry. Because risks are inherent in a wide spectrum of activities, Special Markets invites agents to contact us for help in covering them.” * |
