Lincoln General Insurance Company

Lincoln General Insurance Company has specialized in the transportation industry since 1977, and the transportation emphasis is reflected in its tagline: Lincoln General—with you for the long haul®. Lincoln became part of the Kingsway Financial Services Group in 1998 and, says John T. Clark, president and CEO, “has rapidly grown to become one of the leading commercial auto writers in the United States. Lincoln has also created substantial markets for nonstandard auto, surety and other specialty products. While maintaining direct markets for some business lines, Lincoln has evolved into a program-focused company with more than 90% of direct written premiums currently managed by professional program administrators.”

Lincoln General has an A.M. Best rating of A- (Excellent). “We have a strong commitment to disciplined underwriting and pricing,” Clark says.

Lincoln’s current programs include trucking (primary liability, physical damage, cargo, non-trucking liability, general liability; commercial auto (tow trucks, business auto, public auto, paratransit, daily rental, waste haulers, courier, high SIR); personal lines (nonstandard private passenger auto, assigned risk management, motorcycle, homeowners); specialty casualty (artisan contractors, municipalities, marine liability; surety (custom bonds, bail bonds, contract, performance and payment bonds); and inland marine.

Clark enthusiastically promotes teamwork and commitment to quality. “All I ask of my employees is that they show up every day committed to giving their best effort for the company, their peers, our customers and our business partners; and that they do so with a positive attitude, which is the one thing each of us has complete control over,” Clark says. “At Lincoln, we also stress that the team as a whole is much greater than the sum of the individual parts. No one can be successful working on an island or holed up in a bunker. Success comes from knowing your strengths and weaknesses, then sharing those strengths with others, and calling upon others to contribute and overcome your weaknesses.”

Lincoln General extends these basic beliefs to its relationships with program managers, Clark says. Shannon Smith, vice president of marketing, describes the company’s program strategy: “To develop profitable business through long-term, mutually beneficial partnerships with successful program administrators. The key term is ‘partnership,’” Smith says. “From the development of the business plan, to the marketing of the product and management of distribution, we believe in leveraging the strengths of the general agent and the company in every phase of the process.

“This partnership philosophy is exemplified with our use of a program relationship manager, one person dedicated to ensuring the mutual success of each program,” Smith explains. “A true conduit for all access throughout the organization, the relationship manager leads a professional support team and assists the program administrator and its staff to maximize the potential for growth and profit from each individual program.”

Describing the company’s approach to claims service, Clark says, “While we utilize professional TPA organizations for some specialty programs, Lincoln is committed to providing professional, personal service to our customers through an in-house, dedicated claims staff. Currently nearly 90% of all claims are handled by Lincoln employees.

“At Lincoln General, we are committed to growing our business through productive, mutually beneficial partnerships with professional program administrators,” Clark says. “This is one reason we remain committed to Target Markets, an organization dedicated to the success of program business.”
