Swiss Re's Commercial Insurance


Swiss Re’s Commercial Insurance (formerly GE Insurance Solutions) provides a variety of commercial insurance products in the U.S. Its Program division focuses on niche, industry-specific property and casualty solutions for MGU administered programs. It has been specializing in program business since 1996.

“We understand the components needed to maintain long-term, profitable relationships with our MGUs,” notes Lois Massa, sales executive for the Program Division. “The key components are: data management, underwriting and claims excellence, communication and sharing knowledge.”

The proprietary systems of Swiss Re’s Commercial Insurance enable it to share accurate and timely data regarding specific program experience, claim details, and market trends. This enables it to jointly address changing conditions as they occur, which ultimately leads to better long-term results.

“We believe that strong relationships are the key to mutual success,” says Margaret Zechlin, Program segment business leader. “We staff our organization with qualified technical resources to support our MGUs. Our program managers have more than 20 years experience on average and act as the customer service liaison, referral underwriter, and portfolio manager for each program. Each program is also assigned a customer service team, including members from underwriting, actuarial, claims, loss control, and accounting.”

Zechlin continues: “We recognize that our MGUs have worked hard to build their businesses and need a stable carrier relationship. We believe that regular, in-depth communication is the key to maintaining these relationships.”

Zechlin explains that Swiss Re offers technical resources to its employees and customers by offering training courses, providing access to its research department, publishing white papers and articles, and providing emerging risk symposiums.

“Our goal is to selectively add two to three new programs per year and grow with our existing MGUs, both with existing programs and through new product initiatives,” says Massa. “The ideal program is a specialized program/product that addresses the unique needs of an industry group and is managed by an MGU with both industry and underwriting expertise.”

Massa continues: “As one of the founding carrier members of Target Markets, we have benefited from our membership. Target Markets provides a forum for meeting new program administrators and sharing our technical expertise.”
