Adapting in a Soft Market? Five Star Specialty Programs Delivers

Flexibility is the name of the game for insurance producers. Whether seeking the right forms and terms to meet the needs of the insured, responding when carrier appetites change, or adapting to changing insurance requirements resulting from new legislation, agents and brokers must be prepared for anything. Rate and exposure compression, new entrants and price competition mean retail producers are facing unprecedented challenges to winning and keeping a client’s business. They must be more creative, proactive and thorough as they market risks—and find new ways to differentiate themselves. We’ve been there and we can help.

Five Star Specialty Programs provides retail agents and brokers with a wide variety of solutions. As one of the nation’s largest program administrators and a part of Crump Group, Inc., the nation’s largest insurance wholesaler, Five Star has significant depth, scope and services including 22 programs with over 30 carriers. Five Star is distinguished from its competitors in many ways, one of them being the sheer number of products and services available from one source. Headquartered in Melbourne, Florida, Five Star has eleven locations across the country and most programs are available nationwide. All are placed through carriers with A.M. Best “A-” ratings or better, and cover over five hundred eligible classes combined.

Five Star is more than a name—clients can count on receiving premier “five star” service from underwriters, program managers, support staff and a state-of-the-art servicing platform. Backed by a legacy of over 25 years of underwriting experience, Five Star offers extensive carrier relationships and a partnership with its retail clients that lasts through changing business cycles. As the insurance marketplace evolves, one thing remains the same—Five Star continually expands its offerings and acquires new market relationships. Five Star now offers an even wider variety of specialty products.

Long known for its strength in the transportation industry, Five Star continues to be a leader in its core programs: public auto, paratransit, trucking, waste transporters, and towing and recovery. Yet, this expertise also extends to valet parking, auto dealers, professional liability and its role as a leading workers compensation solution provider. Along with underwriting services, Five Star offers risk management services for its accounts, which aids retailers in helping their insureds to develop safety and loss control programs. Reducing risks for insureds is mutually beneficial, resulting in lower insurance premiums and out of pocket costs.

This year, Five Star has expanded its carrier relationships and eligible classes in many facilities. A new exclusive motor truck cargo with physical damage offering covers trucking operations hauling commodity goods on behalf of others and is available nationwide. This program features an A.M. Best “A+” XV rated carrier, admitted paper, and competitive rates. The new Hazardous Materials Transportation Program offers a complete line of coverages for hazmat hauling risks, including pollution coverage. Notable highlights include an A.M. Best “A” rated carrier and 24 hr/7 day/365 day emergency claims response. Other new developments this year include a new market and the addition of contingent liability for trucking risks, higher limits for the PARKsure™ program, expanded capabilities for the Non-Profit D&O Program, and more.

Five Star has been able to maintain consistently high quality programs and a reputation for excellent customer service for almost three decades. This is no surprise considering it has been led by essentially the same seasoned management team and underwriting staff for most of its history. “We are proud of the longstanding partnerships with our carriers and our ability to expand into new business segments with those carriers as well as to attract new ones. We are focused on broadening our capabilities to meet specialty insurance needs as the marketplace evolves. Target Markets continues to be instrumental in connecting with markets as well as new clients,” said David Tooley, president of Five Star Specialty Programs.
