Asvisitors walk through the home office of Ullico Casualty Group, Inc. (Ullico
Casualty), they notice that the culture of the insurance provider is vastly
different than the culture of other companies. Instead of closed executive
offices, they see underwriters sharing ideas with vice presidents over coffee.
The friendly, collegial environment is testament to the satisfaction the
employees receive in their shared mission of providing innovative solutions to
their special market, the union workplace. Ullico Casualty team members believe
their joint efforts aid the Labor movement in its quest to provide decent wages
and benefits to working men and women. In effect, Ullico Casualty employees
strive to help increase the standard of living for everyday Americans, not
simply to increase the wallets of their shareholders and corner office
executives.
As an extension of their corporate culture, Ullico Casualty employees welcome
independent agents and brokers to join their unique mission to be the Risk
Solutions Provider for Labor. Daniel Aronowitz, president of Ullico Casualty,
explains, “We view our independent agency sales force as our partners in delivering
creative answers to the unique needs of our niche policyholders.”
Ullico Casualty’s portfolio includes professional liability insurance, commercial lines, surety
bonding, captives and alternative risk solutions, and program business.
For more than 25 years, plan fiduciaries and union leaders have relied on Ullico
Casualty for professional liability coverage because the company understands
how to protect them. Aronowitz says, “Our professional liability insurance experts update coverage as liabilities
evolve and know how to resolve claims to protect the personal assets of our
policyholders.” Fiduciary and union liability coverage highlights include a unique “duty to defend” policy form with the policyholder’s right to select counsel and an individual labor leader endorsement, which
provides defense cost protection to safeguard personal assets when laws and
courts prevent the union from indemnifying its leaders in certain
jurisdictions.
Many unions and union employers find difficulty in securing commercial lines
insurance or surety bonding. Ullico Casualty helps to address this by offering
a customized commercial lines portfolio, including workers compensation and surety bonding
options.
Captives and alternative risk solutions
Ullico Casualty partners with agencies, associations, and industry and trade
groups to develop successful captive insurance programs, some starting with
under $1 million in premium. Its resources include Ullico Captive PCC, a
protected cell captive domiciled in Washington, D.C., and Ullico Risk Solutions
LLC, which provides alternative risk solutions such as captive design and
management services. Aronowitz says, “Our tailored captive programs allow our partners to share in their own insurance
risk, creating profit opportunities for agents and owners.” The company is participating in more than 30 group and agency captives and is
currently pursuing more profit-sharing programs.
Ullico Casualty creates innovative programs with insurance brokers, agencies,
program administrators, managing general agents (MGA), and wholesalers that
specialize in core niches. “We provide program administrators all the tools and resources needed to develop
additional revenue streams for existing programs or new ones,” Aronowitz explains, “including access to our protected cell captive for a competitive fee when using
another resource, like fronting, reinsurance, underwriting or claims.” Another benefit he identifies is Ullico Casualty’s “relatively flat organizational structure, which helps our team members create
demand-based products quickly and efficiently with agents and program
administrators.”
Target Markets Program Administrators Association (TMPAA) helps Ullico Casualty
build relationships with emerging and entrepreneurial agents with niche or
line-of business expertise who wish to invest in growing profitable business. “Creativity in program design and development are hallmarks of these
relationships,” Aronowitz notes. “We thank TMPAA for providing a venue where we can develop new business
partnerships and provide even more innovative risk solutions.”
