The doctor is always in at NSU

One of the fastest growing wholesale distributors of medical malpractice insurance, National Specialty Underwriters, Inc. (NSU), credits its success with being close to its markets and clients. “Our regional footprint is one reason for our success,” says Leslie Miller, senior vice president and leader of the healthcare division. “We have grown rapidly over the past five years in agents appointed, in accounts and premium written, and in revenue earned. We’ve established three branch offices—in Bellevue, Washington; Chicago, Illinois; and Atlanta, Georgia. This gives us regional coverage and allows us to stay close to our customer base and to our underwriters. We like being able to take a submission down the street and work directly with the underwriter. Our staff has been expanded to six production teams, all with exceptionally deep industry knowledge.”

In addition to strategically placing offices across the nation, Miller notes that, “...specialization has been the real driving force.” The production teams dedicate themselves to handling either medical providers or medical facilities. This degree of specialization means they talk with their agents and underwriters about a specific class of business every single day. “It stands to reason that you become really good at something that you do 24/7,” says Miller.

“We have been able to develop a real team approach,” observes Miller. “Months in advance of a renewal, our staff helps to craft a client strategy,” she explains, identifying creative solutions.

“But we often distinguish ourselves in those ‘11th hour’ crises. We need to be nimble in order to help out that last minute insured who needs coverage. We do a great deal of business the last 72 hours of each month. When doctors cannot find adequate coverage, they often can’t treat patients. Canceling surgery is not an option. We take great pride in getting it done when others can’t. We handle a huge number of surgery centers; imagine if they couldn’t see their patients because of an insurance issue.”

Among its more than two dozen markets, both admitted and surplus lines, NSU Healthcare unveiled “Select Imaging” in March 2007, in response to growing customer needs. It is a proprietary program designed especially for free-standing medical imaging facilities in the United States. The program is available exclusively through NSU. It provides claims-made professional liability coverage, with policy limits up to $1 million for each claim, and $3 million in the aggregate. Additional coverage is available, including general liability, employee benefits liability, sexual abuse and molestation (with separate limits), and non-owned auto.

“We are excited about Select Imaging. Our med mal expertise is apparent when you look at coverage terms and pricing,” said Miller. “We expect to write about $1 million in premium this year.”
