VGM Insurance


VGM Insurance is one of 15 divisions within the VGM Group, Inc., based in Waterloo, Iowa, where Van G. Miller founded it in 1986. VGM is a highly respected member service organization that provides home medical equipment companies with the services they need to compete with national chains.

“As the company grew, a need for more and more member services became evident,” says John Spragle, president of VGM Insurance and a veteran member of the Target Markets Program Administrators Association (TMPAA). “I was working with a local agency when Van Miller came to see us about liability insurance. I used my time as manager of the VGM account to learn about home medical equipment.”

In 1990, Miller decided to form his own insurance agency. He placed John Spragle at the helm. VGM Insurance has become one of the rare insurance companies focused predominantly on the home medical equipment (HME) providers and manufacturers of durable medical equipment.

“I cannot stress enough that we are a service organization,” Spragle says. “When one of our 3,200 members calls VGM, they speak to a human being. Our service in the insurance division is second to none. We can get a quote and bind it all within a few hours. Almost everything we do is aimed at helping people who need home medical equipment. That’s our niche. VGM operates one of the largest, longest running programs dealing with insuring specialty medical equipment.”

The company’s insureds obviously agree with Spragle’s approach to customer service. VGM Insurance has had a large growth in the past seven years and an excellent retention rate.

Spragle has attended the three most recent TMPAA national meetings. He returned from his trip to Atlanta in May with renewed confidence in the way his company operates.

“This Association gives us reassurance that what we are doing in the industry is correct,” Spragle commented. “They help make us better through their insurance vendor programs.”

Spragle brings 17 years of specialty insurance experience to the TMPAA network, and he says the experience and expertise of other TMPAA members has led to valuable growth within his company. “Until the Program Administrators Association came along I never really had any place to go to discuss niche and program business,” he says. “Target Markets provides a great opportunity for me and my VGM associates to network and find out what is and what isn’t working in other companies. There is a lot of problem solving that goes on at these meetings. TMPAA has been, and continues to be, an extremely valuable asset to me and my company.” →
