Special Section Sponsored by Target Markets Program Administrators Association

Great American Insurance Group

When the Great American Insurance Group’s Executive Liability Division (ELD) decided to increase our affinity business, we felt that joining an organization that focused on developing program business would help accomplish our goal. So we became a member of the Target Markets Program Administrators Association (TMPAA) in its early years and have grown with it ever since.

Our attendance at TMPAA meetings has increased, as have the Association’s attendance totals. Today, several Great American Insurance Group divisions—including fidelity and crime, surety, alternative markets, and specialty human services—are actively involved in the Association. Attending Target Markets summit and mid-year conferences enables the ELD to nurture existing relationships and allows us to connect with a larger number of resources with similar interests in program development areas.

Great American Insurance Group’s roots go back to 1872 when its flagship company, Great American Insurance Company, was founded. Great American Insurance Group, engaged primarily in property and casualty insurance, focuses on specialty commercial products for businesses and the sale of annuities and supplemental products. Great American Insurance Group members are subsidiaries of American Financial Group, Inc. (AFG), based in Cincinnati, Ohio. AFG’s common stock is traded on the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ under the symbol “AFG.”

Our vision: delivering financial solutions that fulfill today’s needs and tomorrow’s dreams; and to be a trusted partner supplying long-term value to customers, employees, and investors.

Our purpose: to enable individuals and businesses to manage financial risk. Our insurance products and services are tailored to meet customers’ specific and ever-changing financial risk exposures. We build value for investors through the strength of our customers’ satisfaction and by consistently producing superior results.

Great American, a large, financially strong insurance group whose insurance companies hold solid financial rankings from independent third-party rating agencies, is proud of who we are and of where we’ve been. Our industry changes daily. Great American changes as well. Our newly developed products and services appeal to both current and new customers. We’ve successfully served our customers for over 130 years and we’re excited about our future centuries.

Great American’s Executive Liability Division has protected business leaders in a variety of organizations for more than 20 years. Our products are considered to be among the industry’s best, thanks in great part to the contributions of our knowledgeable staff professionals and independent agents. As our professional liability and small accounts clientele continue to grow, we encourage you to consider the ELD for your affinity and program business. We bring significant knowledge of directors & officers liability insurance, employment practices liability insurance, fiduciary insurance, and crime insurance exposures to this important sector.

“We define affinity business groups—‘program business’ as it’s often known—as insurance products targeted to particular niche markets or classes, generally representing a book of similar risks placed with one carrier,” explains Jeffrey J. Gauthier, divisional senior vice president of underwriting. “Administration can be retained in-house by us, or by a program specialist with expertise in that market or class. Administrative responsibilities are negotiated between specialist and carrier, and may include marketing, underwriting selection, binding, issuing, billing, premium collections, data gathering, claims management/loss control, and possibly risk sharing. Program specialists typically target niches through differentiation in product, risk management services, delivery mechanism, or price. Specialists can distribute these programs on a retail or wholesale basis.”

Some examples of affinity groups currently handled by ELD:
- Dog clubs
- Humane societies
- Statewide nonprofit associations
- Art foundations
- Municipal water companies
- Pest controllers
- Contractors
- Broadcasters
- Ethanol plants
- Telecom companies
- Condo/homeowners associations

By mid-2007 the ELD insured over 14,000 customers through multiple affinity business programs. According to Jonathan G. Starck, divisional vice president of marketing, “We impose no size restriction on premium volume. Our affinity production sources range from $50,000 to $15 million in annual premium, thus illustrating our flexibility and broad appetite for this business.” →
